Moon signs and Moon phases: your inner weather, and the sky's monthly tide
Listen to this article
Everyone knows their star sign — that's the Sun's sign, your core "this is me." But there's a quieter, more private part of the chart that we feel far more than we admit: the Moon. It's worth knowing in two ways — the sign your Moon is in, and the phase the Moon is in as it cycles overhead.
Your Moon sign: how you feel
When you were born, the Moon was sitting in one of the twelve signs. That's your Moon sign — and if the Sun is who you are, the Moon is how you feel. It's your instincts, your moods, what soothes you, and how you react when no one's watching.
It's why two people born under the same Sun sign can be so different underneath. One might have a Moon in fiery Aries — quick to react, quick to flare, quick to forgive. Another might have a Moon in watery Cancer — feeling everything deeply, needing home and safety to feel right. Same Sun on the outside; very different inner weather.
(To find yours, you'll want your birth date and a rough time — any astrology app or chart will show it.)
When someone says a reading "doesn't sound like them," it's very often because they only ever read their Sun sign — and the Moon was the missing half of the story.
The Moon's phases: the sky's monthly tide
Now look up instead of inward. The Moon swells from a thin sliver to a full disc and back again over about 29 and a half days — the lunation cycle. It's really a slow dance between the Moon and the Sun, and astrologers read each stage as a different kind of moment:
- New Moon — the dark of the Moon, a beginning. A quiet, inward time, lovely for setting intentions and planting seeds rather than launching loudly.
- Waxing (growing) — the building phase: take action, push things along, let them grow.
- Full Moon — the peak. Everything's lit up; feelings run high; matters come to a head and into the light. A time to celebrate, to see clearly, and to release what's run its course.
- Waning (shrinking) — winding down: tidy, let go, rest, and gently roll back toward the next New Moon.
So here's a simple rhythm to work with: start on the New Moon, expect things to culminate (and get a bit intense) at the Full Moon, and let go as it wanes.
The phase you were born under
Here's a lovely extra. Whatever phase the Moon was in when you were born leaves a fingerprint too. Broadly: a New Moon person tends to be instinctive and self-starting, throwing themselves at life; a Full Moon person tends to be more aware and relational, naturally seeing both sides of things. It's a gentle flavour, not a rule — but once you notice it, you'll spot the difference between the people who launch and the people who reflect.
One last thought
The Moon is the most human part of the chart, I think — it's the bit that feels, remembers, and needs comfort. And whether it's your Moon sign or tonight's Moon phase, the message is the same gentle one astrology keeps offering: there's a tide to things. Some moments are for beginning, some for fullness, some for letting go.
You don't have to fight the tide. You can just learn to swim with it.
