You've met the aspects — the meaningful angles between planets, like the trine (120°) or the square (90°). But here's the catch: planets are almost never at the exact angle. So how close do two planets have to be before the aspect actually counts? That allowance is called the orb, and it's one of the most practical ideas a beginner can learn.
An orb is simply the wiggle room we allow around an exact aspect. A trine is exactly 120°, but two planets 117° or 123° apart are still "close enough" to be trine — they're within orb. (Astrologers have lovely old words for this: an exact aspect is partile, and a wide one is platic.)
Think of it as a zone of influence around the perfect angle. Dead-centre, the aspect is at full strength; out toward the edge of the orb, it's faint.
Here's the single most useful rule: the closer to exact, the stronger the aspect. A square that's half a degree from perfect hits hard and unmistakably; a square 7° wide is a background murmur you might barely notice. When two aspects in a chart seem to contradict each other, the tighter one usually wins.
So when you look at your chart, don't just ask which aspects are there — ask how tight each one is. The near-exact ones are the headlines; the wide ones are the fine print.
There's no single official answer (this is astrology — schools differ), but sensible starting values look like:
Don't memorise numbers as a beginner. Just hold the shape of it: big, personal, and close = strong; small, distant, and wide = weak.
If you've ever seen an "orb" slider in a chart app and wondered what it does — this is it. Widen the orbs and more (fainter) aspects appear; tighten them and only the strong ones show. There's no "correct" setting; it's a dial between see everything, including the whispers and show me only what really matters. Beginners are usually happier with tighter orbs and less clutter.
I find orbs quietly reassuring, because they're astrology admitting the obvious: the sky is a matter of degree, not on-or-off. Nothing is perfectly exact, and nearly-exact still counts — it just counts less the further it drifts. It's a gentle, honest way to read a chart: not a list of yes-or-no facts, but a field of louder and softer voices, with the closest ones speaking clearest.
